too much acetaminophen

Acetaminophen
=============

Why is it important to know that all these medicines contain acetaminophen?

Because too much can damage your liver.

Acetaminophen is an active ingredient found in more than 600 over-the-counter
and prescription medicines, such as pain relievers, cough suppressants and cold
medications. It is safe and effective when used correctly, but taking too much
can lead to liver damage. Different medicines contain different amounts, so
follow dosage directions carefully. And don’t take more than one acetaminophen
product a day without first speaking to a health care professional.

Read the label. Know the active ingredients in your medicines.

Did you know that all of the following medications have acetaminophen as the
main ingredient?

* Children's Tylenol
* Tylenol Infant Drops
* Junior Strength Tylenol
* Tylenol Sore Throat
* FeverAll acetaminophen suppositories

So you wouldn't want to give more than one dose of any of the above medications
within their 4-6 hour dosage guidelines.

Acetaminophen is also in many multi-ingredient cold medications, which makes it
much more likely that you may overdose your child by giving two different
medications that both have acetaminophen in it.

Other medications with acetaminophen include (OTC drugs that you are most likely
to give your younger child are listed in bold print), but are not limited to:

* Actifed Cold & Sinus Maximum Strength Caplets and Tablets
* Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine Liqui-Gels
* Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Sinus Medicine Effervescent Tablets
* Alka-Seltzer Plus Night-Time Cold Medicine Liqui-Gels
* Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Cough Medicine Liqui-Gels
* Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Sinus Medicine Liqui-Gels
* Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine Effervescent Tablets
* Alka-Seltzer Plus Flu Medicine Liqui-Gels
* Alka-Seltzer Plus Nose & Throat Cold Medicine Effervescent Tablets
* Benadryl Allergy & Cold Caplets
* Benadryl Allergy & Sinus Headache Caplets & Gelcaps
* Benadryl Maximum Strength Severe Allergy & Sinus Headache Caplets
* Contac Severe Cold and Flu Caplets Maximum Strength
* Contac Severe Cold and Flu Caplets Non-Drowsy

** see names of more medications online...

So remember that acetaminophen is an ingredient in many medications besides
'Tylenol' and you should read the label and know what ingredients are in the
medications that you give your children.
